Moreover, it allows the LSR to be precisely placed in areas of the product that require functional functionality, and portions of the thermoplastic substrate that are not overmolded with the silicone no longer need to be thickened to withstand the LSR’s high curing temperatures.

Depending on the application, some LSR’s can be cured at room temperature while others are formulated to cure in an oven at high temperatures. In either case, proper cleaning is essential to maintain the optimum condition of the injection molding equipment and work area. This includes ensuring that the injection mold is clean and free of organic rubbers or other polymers that can poison the catalyst and interfere with the cured reaction. In addition, all metering and mixing equipment must be thoroughly cleaned. Any organic or inorganic contamination may inhibit the cured reactions and result in defects in the finished part. To avoid this, most molding houses employ a variety of automation options for the removal and transportation of molded parts from the injection-molding machines to value-added secondary operations such as slitting, printing, marking, and assembly. This reduces handling, minimizes the risk of injury to workers, and improves productivity.
