Color is a key aspect of most silicone products.silicone coloring paste The traditional, and arguably ugly orange pigment comes from iron oxide. This pigment is used in gum based, peroxide cured silicone rubber materials and can be seen in the majority of rubber gaskets. This same pigment is not used in liquid based, platinum cured silicone materials. This is because performance takes precedence over aesthetics in these applications and the material must be able to handle high temperatures, oil resistance and longevity.

There are many ways to color silicone. You can use silicone paints or you can use flock which can be useful in coloring translucent silicones to increase translucency. Alternatively, you can use poly color paste which is a wet powder that can be added to the silicone. This will help to tint the silicone and will not interfere with the mechanical properties of the finished product.

Silicone pigments are highly concentrated liquid colors that are used to intrinsically color silicones. Unlike 'paints' they do not interfere with the setting of the silicone and are not mixed with any binder - so they do not alter the viscosity or rheology of the material that they are added to. They are available in black, brown, blue, red, yellow and skin tones. Most effects artists stock a range of these colours as they are essential when colouring a prosthetic appliance or prop to match a performers skin tone.
