During the production process, HTV silicone rubber is exposed to various environmental stresses and electrical stress. These stresses include alternating heat, corona discharge, and humidity. The aging process of silicone rubber is complex, and the effects of these stresses on its physicochemical properties have not been systematically investigated. In this article, we established a multi-factor aging platform considering temperature cycling, moisture, and corona discharge, and analyzed the resulting changes in the surface morphology and hydrophobicity of HTV-SR samples. The aging results show that the degradation of SR is correlated with the range of temperature cycling, and the crosslink density of the sample decreases as the temperature cycle increases.

The aging of HTV-SR is also associated with the formation of surface defects. As the aging progresses, the size of the defects and their distribution increase. Moreover, the surface of the elastomer becomes rougher. In addition, the adsorption peak height at 790-840 cm-1 decreases. This indicates that the nonpolar methyl groups of the molecular side chain are broken, which leads to poor hydrophobicity. As a result, the CA of water droplets on the surface is smaller and the inter-water-droplet interactions are easier to connect.

The most important factor affecting the aging of HTV-SR is the temperature cycling. When the aging is accelerated by the addition of humidity and corona discharge, the corrosion resistance of HTV-SR decreases. This is due to the fact that the humidity and corona discharge accelerate the degradation of SR, as well as the dispersing of oxygen in the polydiformaldehydesiloxane molecular network. In addition, the addition of humidity also increases the fog water conductivity and reduces the flashover voltage of SR. The effect of the aging on the DC flashover characteristics of SR is also shown.
