How Silicone Rubber Is Compounded, Vulcanized, and Molded

Silicone rubber is a versatile, non-toxic material that can be used to produce a variety of products, including silicone milk bottle covers, silicone bracelets, and silicone seal rings.silicone rubber raw material vulcanizing agent It is resistant to extreme temperatures, chemical and physical degradation, and can be molded into complex shapes. Silicone rubber also provides superior insulation and heat retention. Its non-toxic nature makes it a suitable alternative to plastic materials for many medical, food, and electronics applications. To manufacture silicone, raw materials are compounded, vulcanized, and molded to form finished products. The process of forming the silicone rubber, which is known as vulcanization, is what gives it its useful properties. Vulcanization is a chemical reaction that bonds polymer molecules into a strong, flexible, and durable substance. This is done by a process called cross-linking, which creates atomic bridges between the chains of the raw rubber. The atomic bridges give the rubber its resilience and strength, while also making it more resistant to extreme conditions.

There are three major types of silicone rubber, each with different applications and processing capabilities: Heat Cured Rubber (HCR), Room Temperature Vulcanizing Silicone Rubber (RTV), and Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR).silicone rubber raw material vulcanizing agent HCR and RTV are made from reactive silicone gums that have straight chains, high molecular weight macromolecules, and one or two functional groups. These groups can react with other chemical compounds, such as organic peroxide crosslinkers or platinum catalysts, to form a three-dimensional network of siloxane.

The HCR and RTV rubbers have good temperature, aging, and chemical resistance.silicone rubber raw material vulcanizing agent They are excellent insulators and can withstand a wide range of temperature fluctuations, including those that occur in the automotive industry. These elastomers can be found in voltage line insulators, automotive sensors, long-term implant materials, kitchenware, and electrical applications.

RTV silicone rubber has a lower molecular weight than its other counterparts, and it can be processed using less expensive equipment. It is also much more weather resistant than other silicones. It is typically used in a wide range of molds and prototypes, as well as in industrial sealants. RTV silicones are also used to make some injection-molded consumer electronic products.

HCR silicones are cured using a mixture of high-temperature and low-temperature methods. They are often cured with an organic peroxide or platinum catalyst in polycondensation systems. In addition, they may be cured using a radical chain-extending oxidizing agent, such as peroxyethylene, dimethyl or diethyl methiosulfate, or an alkali metal metathesis reagent, such as sodium iodide, methyl thiosulfate, or potassium nitrate. The oxidizing agents react with the silicon-oxygen backbone of the polymer, forming crosslinks that give the material its physical and mechanical properties. They are also stable at ambient temperature and offer good tensile, elongation, compression, and abrasion resistance.
